It’s time for the grand finale of our MR2 restoration series.

This last chapter is a doozy, so grab a cuppa, some biccies (we won’t judge), and get comfy as we share the rollercoaster ride of bringing this classic back to its glory days.

The Return of Mike

Mike was back from Miami, sporting a tan that made us all a bit jealous, and it was straight to work on the MR2’s engine. When the car arrived, the engine was partially stripped—an ominous start with missing parts and misplaced bits. It was clear we had our work cut out for us.

Stripping and Rebuilding

The only way forward was a complete teardown to the bare block. The engine, off the road for years, was plagued with oil leaks and rust. After three intense flushes, we finally saw some promise. We replaced all gaskets, the alternator, starter motor, driveshaft seals, and coolant hoses. Then, it was time to fit everything back into the freshly painted shell—a task easier said than done with missing mounts and a puzzling assortment of nuts and bolts.

Troubleshooting and Triumphs

Reassembly was a challenge, with a stubborn engine that didn’t want to give up its prolonged vacation. A missed grounding on a module almost had us beaten, but a quick fix had her purring like a kitten. The maiden voyage around the estate was flawless, and the look on Mike’s face was priceless. This little car had stolen a piece of our hearts.

Aesthetic Touches and Final Adjustments

Next, we made her look pretty again, reattaching wings, bumpers, and lights—what a beauty! The interior needed special attention, especially with a fiddly immobilizer removal. The retrimmed seats, untouched since the car’s hiatus, along with freshly cleaned carpets and new sound deadening, were finally installed.

The Final Hurdle

Just when we thought we were done, the MR2 failed its first MOT on emissions—a minor hiccup. A bit of CAT cleaner and a few more miles, and she passed with flying colours.

Ryan from RH Detailing made the paint pop with some added protection too, and the car was ready for her big day.

The Emotional Handover

The handover wasn’t just about passing over keys; it was a celebration.

We covered the car, added a big red bow, some balloons, and flowers.

When the owner arrived, delayed but excited, the reveal was everything we hoped for.

Tears, hugs, and a lot of emotions filled the garage as she reconnected with her beloved MR2.

Reflections and Goodbyes

Driving off, the MR2 not only left our garage but also left a lasting imprint on our team.

We’ve had ups and downs, shared laughter and frustration, but above all, we crafted a masterpiece that’s out there making new memories.
